Ramesh Kabiri is one of the few seniors on the Manteca High basketball team, and his leadership is crucial. He is a good leader who keeps everyone at the same level, he communicates with everyone, thinks ahead of time, and he keeps everyone going.

“Mesh brings a lot to the table when it comes to being a leader. Mesh always knows how to get the team going when we are down, when he gets going and starts talking you can tell there is a different vibe on the floor,” fellow senior and team captain Noah Lyons said. “Him being a leader to this team is important because he sets good examples to the other players on the team.”

Kabiri practiced a lot during the offseason, playing in a summer and fall league. Through Jan. 12, Manteca is off to a fast start at 14-4. The Buffaloes’ power ranking in the Sac-Joaquin Section is also very high at No. 23, according to MaxPreps.com.

The Tower spoke with Kabiri about his experiences being the captain and point guard for the Manteca High boys basketball team.

The Tower: As a captain, what roles do you play?

Ramesh Kabiri: As a captain, I’m one of three seniors on the team so it’s a big role for us to have leadership on the team. They always have to have me communicating to everyone have everyone on the same page and get us going.

TT: What is the different between last year’s team and this year’s team?

RK: There’s a big difference, last year’s team wasn’t really good on offense, we had offense but we would mostly wouldn’t win one game because our defense rebounding. This year we have a lot of shooting now, our offense is completely different. The only difference between last year and this year is that the defense improved, that’s about it.

TT: Was it your main goal to become a captain for this year’s team? Explain

RK: Yes, you can say that I mean I kind of knew. I was captain last year so I kind of knew I was going to be captain this year. Also, important because I’m a senior on the team, I have expectations to come out and win the game.

TT: What are you doing to make the team better?

RK: I am the point guard of the team, so I’m one of the main ball hands on the team. I set up plays, I get everyone on the same page, I make sure I talk on the court, and make sure I do all that.

TT: What factors did you add on to your team that helped?

RK: My leadership probably, being point guard on the team, you have to know what’s going on you got to be a step ahead of everyone.

TT: What was your off season like to get to where you are right now?

RK: So, in offseason, we never stopped playing. We had a summer league going on, a fall league going on during the offseason, so we never stopped playing. So, I was playing a lot of games through that and it got me to where I am right now.

TT: Are you happy with there you are right now.

RK: I am really happy. We have a good record; we are 12-4 in the league. Our power rank is very high. We are ranked high on our C2 playoffs, we’re division 2 playoffs so its going to be tough.
