Sound Off: If Raising Cane’s came to campus, would you stay?
While the one lunch pilot was considered a success with very few incidents, the one common complaint involved the traffic leaving school. Should the school partner with an off-campus restaurant – like Chick-Fil-A, Iron Horse Deli, or Raising Cane’s – to add to the lunch menu and prevent so many kids from leaving campus?

The school should partner with an off-campus restaurant to help with the flow of students leaving and coming back to school during lunch. It would give students quality food that is more appealing on campus, so they do not have to go off campus for lunch. Manteca High’s food is OK but not very tasty or appetizing, especially if someone has the option to go off campus. Manteca High sophomore Izabelle Zaramskas states, “I think it would be way easier for students to get food.” The school should partner with a restaurant that many students like and has a variety of different foods to choose from, whether it be something close, like Taco Bell or Iron Horse. It could also be something a bit farther like Canes or In-N-Out. It would most likely make kids very happy.

I think that would be a wonderful idea because people wouldn’t have to travel and then be late for their classes. There would be more people on campus, and we wouldn’t have to worry about waiting for a friend who then doesn’t have an off-campus pass. I interviewed a student named Manuel Padilla, a senior, and he said: “Yeah, I believe it would be a good idea to have fast food places here because it would become more convenient. Fast food places I would bring here would be Canes, Iron Horse and McDonalds.”

The school should partner with either In-N-Out or Chipotle. I say this because these are two of the most visited places during lunch. If we were to put one on our campus, it would make it easier for people to get food and not have as many people leave to go get it. It would also help the off-campus lines and make the time getting back to school better instead of being late for lunch.

Manteca High School should partner with an off-campus restaurant to add to its lunch menu, and to prevent the traffic that comes with having a one lunch schedule. It would also help students not be tardy to school. Restaurants like Iron Horse, Taco Bell, and Pizza Guys could be great choices to partner with, since they are the most popular amongst students. Junior Eduardo Alcocer gives his opinion of partnering up with an off-campus restaurant, stating: “I think the school could benefit from partnering up with a restaurant, some that I would want would be like Taco Bell and Iron House. It would also prevent the tons of traffic during lunch.”

Partnering with an off-campus restaurant will minimize but not prevent the traffic leaving campus. Picking a popular restaurant would help, although the students will eventually get bored of that one choice. This may reduce traffic, but after the initial buzz wears off, students will return to leaving campus. Overall, I believe partnering with a popular restaurant will reduce the traffic and congestion leaving campus. Partnering with Chik-Fil-A or In-N-Out will be among the best options. Sydney Rickets, a junior, agrees that a partner restaurant will be beneficial. “I think it should be one of the restaurants around campus like Mangy Moose.”

Personally, I believe that it would be a better option to maybe open Taco Bell to the students during lunch. I would not be included in going to Taco Bell as I will most likely begin packing my own lunch for this one lunch situation when it takes effect next year. I still think it would be a good idea to sort of overcrowding issues, which lead to seats being taken and lines being unbelievably long.

I think it would be cool to have Manteca High partner with an off-campus restaurant to add variety to our one lunch menu. It would make getting the food I want much more accessible. I hate wasting most of my lunch either walking or driving to get the food, and by the time I get back I have no time to eat. It is lowkey inconvenient. It we had like Chik-Fil-A or like In-N-Out on campus, I would have time to eat my food. This change would be a benefit to the overall flow of our lunch. A sophomore, Antonio Fraley, agreed that Manteca High should add In-N-Out to its menu. “I feel like they would make more money on campus,” Fraley said, “because we have the most students at out campus out of Sierra and EU (East Union).”

A collaboration with food franchises would be a good way to control the traffic if one lunch happens. The way I would have it set up is by having the food set up outside the cafeteria where the old Buff café sign is, and having the food served there. I would also make it to where the prices are discounted for the students. All students would still have access to the school's food normally provided. This also gives people who don’t have access to an off campus pass the opportunity to do something else other than the school provided food. Now if there were multiple restaurants participating in the collaboration, I think no one would go off campus for lunch and the school would be packed and there wouldn’t be enough space for students. I spoke with a senior by the name of Erik Vivians, and he agreed that having some sort of restraint collaboration would be beneficial. Vivians, like me, had to deal with the unbearable traffic going off campus during the one lunch pilot. Vivians stated that the longest it took him to get off was 15 minutes, that’s half of our lunch. Clearly not a lot of time was allocated for those who got the short end of the stick and were in the back of the line. But there was one part where Vivians and I disagreed. He said that the lunch from the restaurant collaboration should be free, because it gives the kids who rely on the free lunch another option for a meal that they need.

I believe that the school should partner with an off-campus restaurant to add to the lunch menu and prevent off-campus traffic from getting bad. Currently, places like Iron Horse Deli take a good chunk out of a student’s lunch. With a one lunch schedule approaching, even more people will want places like Iron Horse. The long wait could cause tardies as students will want their food, not realizing how little time they have. Adam Gabriel Delos Reyes, a sophomore at Manteca High School, stated, “Manteca should (partner with local food places) in order to make less kids go off campus.”
