Sound Off: Does Manteca High do enough to promote its clubs?

Club Rush is just around the corner. On Thursday, Aug. 29, the clubs will fill the plaza in front of the new gym with their tables and booths in hopes of recruiting new members. Manteca High offers a wide variety of clubs, representing its students' ethnicities, interests, and concerns.

Tower reporters assessed the strength of the school’s club scene using the guiding questions: What club should Manteca High offer its students and why? Does MHS do enough to promote and support its clubs? What events can Manteca High host to promote its diversity?

Addison Jackson, student reporter

I believe Manteca High promotes their clubs adequately and as much as they can. I think a lot of students are unaware of the clubs on campus not because of the school’s lack of promotion but because students don’t pay attention to morning announcements or attend events like club rush. I feel clubs are supported on campus with various methods of fundraising and volunteer opportunities available. These include selling items or food at football games, running and helping at wrestling, baseball or basketball games and tournaments. This allows clubs to support themselves and give members a nicer experience, which in turn will further promote and support the club. It is also up to the club advisor and officers to support the club by providing ideas and being smart with the club’s funds. If this doesn't happen, the club might fail because of debt.

Maggie Rivera, student reporter

Manteca High should offer a fans club people who are fans of certain shows and movies. Students can bond with others with similar interests. I think MHS can do more to promote its clubs and get its clubs’ profiles out to the public. Manteca High should host more multicultural events. They may want to make an event for each heritage month. This way people could see more of the culture of our students. These events would be great if for a game. For instance, halftime could be used to incorporate a cultural dance while boosting a club’s popularity and embracing its traditions.

Owen Gully, student reporter

Manteca High can use sports games as events to promote clubs. They can also use rallies and dances to promote the clubs. I believe they do not promote clubs enough; they should be promoting it more because I don’t know much about clubs. Clubs are great for the school.

Leonardo Munguia, student reporter

Manteca High School should offer a community club, which could find and offer community service opportunities for students. This would benefit the school and students and other clubs with a community service element like the National Honors Society, which requires its students to do community service. This could help the school’s image and reputation, showing the community that Manteca High students are able to love and give back to the community. This also can help students with college applications as schools can see that you are an active member of your community.

Rocco Rattaro, student reporter

I believe that the school can do even more to promote and support its clubs. They could put up more advertisements, flyers, and posters around the campus. There could be ads inside of the school newspaper, The Tower, so that clubs can get more attention. There could also be more than one club rush, so that there are more opportunities to join clubs. That would likely get more members in each club if they held a club rush every mid-term.

Rebecca Navarro, student reporter

I believe Manteca High will benefit from providing a mental health or wellness club. Having a club of this type will provide a safe place for students to come and talk openly about their troubles and concerns in a welcoming and comforting environment. Everyone has their own struggles and giving students an opportunity to be honest with their feelings instead of bottling them up will promote better wellbeing, attitude, and confidence. In turn, building a better campus for everyone and letting others know they’re not alone. However, to find success in a club of this kind or any other, Manteca High must work towards getting clubs more attention. I think there should be events such as lunchtime activities, where clubs can rotate hosting games in order to spread awareness for their interests and causes.

Mateo Esparza, student reporter

I believe there should be a club about movies and the creation of film. I feel that a lot of people on campus are interested in movies and shows. This would be a successful club because it is revolved around a topic that would get good interest. It would be about the type of films and how they were created. I believe that Manteca High School doesn’t do enough to promote their clubs. They could do more club rushes at lunch because most people are bored at lunch looking for something to do. Also, they could put up signs and advertisements on campus to promote certain clubs for the students.

Salvador Paniagua, student reporter

I think Manteca High does do enough to support and promote their clubs because they always have a club rush and posters everywhere on campus, and they even have fundraisers at school events. That said, a few ways Manteca High can promote its diversity could be more multicultural assemblies, culture-themed dances, and a culture dress-up week. Last year we had our first multicultural assembly in a couple years, and I thought it was really cool. I felt proud when I saw my culture represented.

RubyAnne Noonkester, student reporter

I think we need a film club. Film is an intricate and detailed piece of art that many students appreciate. I for one would love a film club, a place to go after school to discuss and possibly create film. Movies are a safe place for many students who enjoy film and lots of kids could use a place like that.  A film club could bring people together, especially people so love film.
